Job Description: Retail Store Manager
Purpose/Function/Scope
Mud Bay's Retail Store Managers are both leaders and team players; both entrepreneurs and employees. Within the context of an ambitious, principled and democratic retail company, Retail Managers have primary responsibility for building, operating and improving the company's individual business units. In a nutshell, a Retail Manager's job is to harness the people, principles, tools, experience and other assets of Mud Bay to make their store a success.
Primary Accountabilities
- The right store staff members are in place, well-educated and working together effectively as a team to achieve goals, overcome obstacles and master the unexpected.
- The store delivers superb, happy, educational, Mud Bay-style customer-staff interactions every hour it's open, 361 days a year.
- The store is a happy, functional, respectful, educational, inspiring, challenging and safe place to work.
- The store is clean, attractive, well-stocked and well-merchandised with the correct, clearly-priced inventory every hour it's open, 361 days a year.
- Sales growth is at or above the store's targets.
- The store is operated according to Mud Bay's principles and procedures every hour it's open, 361 days a year.
- The store makes and achieves annual business plans that are engaging, challenging and support Mud Bay's annual goals and its long-term business strategy.
- The Retail Manager possesses, puts to use and teaches a thorough understanding of Mud Bay's culture, strategy, principles, procedures and performance measures.
- Store staff members are educated and empowered to make principled, Mud Bay-style decisions.
- The Retail Manager and the store's staff collaborate effectively and happily with regional retail coordinators, other admin. staff, and other retail managers.
- Staff members work with inventory and the retail information system is always done in the One Right Way (accountability begins after implementation of Tomax system during the winter/spring of 2007).
- On-hand inventory quantities are correct (accountability begins two weeks after implementation of Tomax system during the winter/spring of 2007)
- Store staffing maximizes labor efficiency and customer happiness.
- Store operations comply with all relevant employment and safety laws.
- Hire, develop, empower and evaluate store staff. Terminate when necessary.
- Organize and oversee the education of store staff.
- Lead the store in setting and reaching goals.
- Continually monitor, analyze and experiment with ways to improve store and staff performance.
- Provide a model of superb Mud Bay-style customer-staff interactions.
- Maintain a close, functional working relationship with regional retail coordinator based on effective communication and happy collaboration.
- Optimize store workforce and schedule.
- Oversee inventory handling including purchasing, receiving, returns and cycle counting.
- Oversee cleaning.
- Oversee merchandising.
- Oversee restocking of store with supplies.
- Prepare for, and attend, managers' meetings, trainings and other educational events.
- Assist in the recruitment, hiring and education of managers-in-training.
- Average between 40 and 45 hours of work per week.

- Proficiency with MS Word and Excel; proficiency (or ability to become so) with Retail.net.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills.
- The ability to lead people through change.
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
- A sense of humor.
- B.A., B.S. degree or equivalent experience.
