Job Description: Store Shift Lead

Purpose/Function/Scope

Mud Bay's Retail Store Shift Leaders are both leaders and team players. Within the context of a highly collaborative retail store environment, Retail Store Shift Leaders have primary responsibility for ensuring the continuance of an excellent customer and staff experience, and correct and efficient store operations during non-inventory shifts when the Retail Store Manager is not scheduled. The Shift Leader is the position most accountable for making sure that there are adequate store supplies and Mud Bay literature, and that store retail and staff areas are kept clean. The Shift Lead stands in for the Store Manager when the Store Manager and/or Manager-in-Training are not available.

Primary Accountabilities

  • The store delivers superb, happy, educational Mud Bay-style customer-staff interactions. Shares accountability with Retail Store Manager.
  • The store is operated according to Mud Bay's principles and procedures. Shares accountability with Retail Store Manager.
  • Store opening, closing and/or safe reconciliation and depositing procedures are completed correctly and on time. Shares accountability with Retail Store Manager.
  • The store is kept well stocked with store supplies and Mud Bay literature.
  • All merchandise and retail/staff areas are kept clean every hour the store is open.
Additional Accountabilities
  • The Retail Store Shift Leader possesses, puts to use and helps to teach a thorough understanding of Mud Bay's culture, strategy, principles, procedures and performance measures.
  • Store operations comply with all relevant employment and safety laws. Shares accountability with Retail Store Manager.
Primary Duties
  • Provide a model of superb Mud Bay-style customer-staff interactions.
  • Help Retail Store Manager to hire and evaluate store staff.
  • Communication with Retail Store Manager on all store and staff issues, problems and/or training needs is timely, complete and clear.
  • Maintain a thorough and up-to-date knowledge of store operations and procedures.
  • Order store supplies and Mud Bay literature.
  • Provide Retail Store Manager with feedback that will help with the Manager's efforts to continually monitor, analyze and experiment with ways to improve store and staff performance.
Additional Duties
  • Maintain a close, functional working relationship with Retail Store Manager, Store Inventory Lead and Regional Retail Coordinator based on effective communication and happy collaboration.
  • Provide shift labor-needs feedback to help Retail Store Manager optimize store workforce and schedule.
  • Oversee store cleaning.
  • Assist store in setting and reaching goals.
  • Help provide leadership for the store when Retail Store Manager or Inventory Lead is not available.

  • Proficiency (or ability to become so) with Retail.net.
  • Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds.
  • A sense of humor.
Details
  • Immediate supervisor: Store Manager
  • Positions supervised: None
  • Positions directed: Directs store staff on the retail floor when Retail Manager is not present; however all store positions report to the Retail Store Manager.
  •  Section: Store
  • Full-time or PT? Full-Time 32-hours/week minimum, 5 days/week. In 2006, schedule is expected to be primarily hours when the Manager is not scheduled, including closings and one weekend day. Will include filling other shifts as necessary and may include overtime.
  • Wages: Depend on job classification, performance, capabilities and seniority
  • Location: Retail store in western WA (store assignment may change)

  •  Leave: Two weeks per year, based on 40-hour work weeks
