Job Description: Mud Bay Store Staff

Purpose/Function/Scope

A Store Staff Member is a crucial part of the store team that gives MudBay customers useful, accurate answers to non-veterinary questions about cats and dogs.  Store Staff Members have a commitment to expanding their knowledge of dogs and cats.  They’re flexible; they have good judgment, and they work together to ensure that MudBay stores are clean, interesting and happy places for customers and staff to shop, work and talk with each other.

 Primary Accountabilities

  • Every dog and cat owner has had an educational, interesting and fun visit to MudBay
  • Treats every customer and coworker with friendliness and respect
  • Every customer has gotten as much or as little help as he or she wanted 
  • Every transaction is accurately performed
  • Decisions reflect best judgment informed by an understanding of MudBay’s principles, practices and customer experience

 Additional Accountabilities

  • Understands MudBay store operations procedures and their purpose
  • Understands and applies the principles and practices as laid out in MudBay’s staff handbook

 Primary Duties

  • Shares information with customers, learns from them and does anything reasonable to help them
  • Continually learning how and when (for what situations) to recommend and not recommend every product for sale in the store
  • Successfully participates in required initial and required on-going training.  Training expectations will continue to evolve and change over time
  • Helps with inventory maintenance including receiving, rotating, restocking, fronting, facing and cleaning
  • Works safely and helps maintain a clean and safe working environment

 Additional Duties

  • Works with store leadership team to assess potential new hires by participating in trial-shift evaluations
  • Helps train and teach new staff, works with all staff in a manner that contributes to the success of the entire team
  • Helps customers carry purchases to their cars
  • Works with Store Inventory Lead to ensure that all items are in stock
  • Helps to ensure that all shelves, pegs, baskets, etc. are accurately priced and labeled

Availability and Scheduling Expectations

A Mud Bay Store Staff Member is expected to work a minimum of 180 hours/quarter (excluding regularly scheduled training hours) and to be able and willing to fill shifts for absent coworkers and work occasional shifts in other stores within the same group.  Store Staff must: work 15+ hours/week; attend the first Dog and Cat Specialist training available after completing 30-day trial; have flexibility to work more shifts than they usually are scheduled for during holidays or to cover when coworkers are ill or using leave; attend regularly scheduled trainings.  Must be available to work at least one weekend day/week, open-store holidays and either 2 or 3 receiving or closing shifts whether regularly scheduled for those shifts or not.  Changes to availability must be submitted to Retail Store Manager at least three weeks in advance so schedules may be posted two weeks in advance.  All Mud Bay Store Staff must work the two weeks before Christmas.

Primary Qualifications

  • Speaks clearly and honestly – and follows through
  • The ability to work as part of a happy and effective team. 
  • Ability to repeatedly lift and carry 50 pounds during open-store and receiving shifts
  • Likes to think critically, analyze and evaluate situations and come up with a solution
  • Enjoys researching and reading a variety of written materials, then sharing what they’ve learned
  • Competent arithmetic skills and comfortable using computers, adding machines and calculators
  • Self-motivated yet comfortable taking direction and working alone or in groups
  • A sense of humor
